Matt Nolan Cymbals - ongoing highlights thread

    Hello folks,

In this thread, I will post from time to time my new creations which I think are interesting. I hope you think so too.

    First up - a set of 7 pitch-matched cymbals.

These are hand hammered in B20 alloy. Pretty traditional looking for me! Except the 3 extra small holes per cymbal. These are actually going to be mounted and played more like gongs. They are for a curious interactive science / art exhibit at a museum in Rotterdam, Holland in a few weeks time. I don't want to spoil the surprise, so no more details than that at present regarding the exhibit.

The 7 cymbals form a symmetrical pitch-matched set - 8", 12", 16", 20", 16", 12", 8". The two 8" cymbals are the same pitch and timbre, the two 12" cymbals are the same pitch and timbre, etc. The relative pitch intervals between the pairs and the single 20" are all tuned to be nice sounding. This took some time as you can probably imagine! Each pair is also matched to within 2g worst case. Some of them are dead on.

    Cheers,
    Matt.

    Why the holes?

Looking forward (as always) to your sound files.

but I thought that was usually only 2 holes closer together. Maybe the third is to tether them loosely at the bottom?

Matt that's a great family portrait. Nice composition.

How do you get the dark color on these ones?

Those are B15. The dark brown / black is from fire on those. Then partial lathing.

Thank you! It just felt like the right layout. Just a quick snap. I threw a black cloth on the floor...

The third holes are for extra tethering as you suggest. I think they're actually going to be held quite tightly in the exhibit. I've hammered the tension distribution a little different than with a normal use cymbal, even including a certain amount of deliberate barking seal. They are cymbal profile, but a little more gong-like in tension distribution. Somewhat of a hybrid.

I wonder if it's the same thing that Meinl uses to make these:

Here's a bit of fun with wobble:

Video is 8x slowed down. Shot at 4x speed and played back a further 2x slower.

    20", circa 2000g, B20, hand hammered, etc.

Here's a 22" in B20 at 2124g. This one is going to Musikmesse in Frankfurt next week. Alas, I am not going to be there in person. But there will be a set of my cymbals on the Handmade Drums booth - number A79 in Hall 3.0.

I'll see if I can get any better photos in daylight tomorrow...

Very fresh. Hammered yesterday and today. So no soundfile unfortunately - unless it returns from Frankfurt unsold.
