    70's Rogers Dynasonic on CL

    This has sparked my curiosity.

    http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/msg/2976870136.html

The price seems right. I see it's missing the cage. Can someone fill me in on this part's utility? How/if it effects the sound and value...

    Thanks

Great price - grab it. You can buy the snare frame unit on ebay, I would imagine, but it'll cost as much or more than the $125 the guy is asking for the drum. It's also missing the bottom hoop, which had gates which allow you to adjust the snare tension vis a screw on the side of the snare frame.

The snare frame allows you to tension the snares before they contact the head. That way, you can have a really crisp, tight snare sound without choking the drum. Buddy Rich was consulted by Rogers when the dyna was designed, iirc.

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out if he calls back.

I have a Gretsch brass that is rebuilt with some non-original parts, so I'm wondering if another "players" brass snare is worth it.

That thing is useless without the snare frame. Ask me how I know.

I really like Dynas, but I have no idea where all the snare frames went. It seems like 90% of them are being sold without the snare frame (they're actually cast Zamac, and crack pretty easily).

Nico is 100% right. The dyna shell doesn't have a snare bed.

Dynas can sound phenomenal if you know what you're doing and take the time to set them up properly.

    However, most people do neither.

Thanks for the lowdown. No beds and at least $100 for the cage... I think I'm passing

Because there are so many Dynas out there missing snare frames, I decided to check with Pro Drum for parts availability and costs. Kind of a "warning, Will Robinson" sort of thing for people contemplating Dynas missing parts. Here's what they sent me:

Parts to bring it back (not including heads) come to $197:

    snare frame only......98.00
    dynasonic snares......49.00
    rods @1.00............10.00
    bottom hoop (new).....40.00

that doesn't count the snare guards, which they are out of stock on, but I see on ebay for $50.
