Wow I had no idea they even made a snare that size at the time. A rock drummer dream. Worth the price I think too. JP!

You heard correctly. Somewhere in the very early 50's, harvesting African Mahogany was outlawed due to the overwhelming demand for musical instruments and furniture. After that, Philippine Mahogany was used and from what I have read, is not considered "musical instrument grade." I've owned a number of Ludwig and WFL snares and less than 2 months ago decided to buy a 6.5 WFL Damien Ave badge (1948-1952) so I could be sure I was getting African Mahogany. The difference is night and day. I will never part with this drum - for the era jazz I love to play - 1950's - this wood is a must. Got if off reverb for $300 - WFL Contest model. Going to the grave with it.

the Zephyr a Wiffle ^ variant..

prior to these were the "extra-vicious" "Ludwig & Ludwig" snares. W/the semi die cast hybrid Chopper hoop..the flat (but not Anthony) Imperials, and well, the million dollar smiles..

The wood is probably great but I could never get with the Zephyr lug.
