Your right on the money as far as technique and tools.
Go easy let the drill do the work taking care not to push the drill through the hole and splinter the inside.

Hey jp, may I ask a question? If I'm not mistaken you in the building profession. And you know a thing or two about drums.

I've finally acquired all the things I need to drill my 8x12 and install the mount directly to the shell. (its tricky to acquire basic tools and things here on Beijing). The drum is a thin, maple shell with a not so super high quality lacquer finish. My question is, should I drill inside-out or outside-in. I worry that the cheap finish is gonna chip.

My instinct says to drill outside-in, and the key is to use a sharp blade, a good starting hole and very high speed. Of these, I think the high speed is the most important.

Do you agree? Big thanks for your time and expertise!
