Glad that Cymbalholic is back, and after lurking a bit I know this place isn't only for old K aficonados and the like. So, it's time for me to come out.
I have a healthy selection of cymbals: 63 pair of hats and 193 other rides, crashes & chinas (total 319 pieces, and there are more on the way!) Lots of Zildjian, Sabian & Paiste, as well as some Zilcos (old & newer,) AZCO, Zyn, Istanbul, Meinl, Ufip, et al.
No old K's, and if I need those kind of sounds, I'm pretty well covered with some of the Turkish pieces and some sweet, older Zildjians.
Storage became a problem particularly when I crossed the 200 mark, so I built shelving to house them library-style, adding more shelves as necessary. A handful live permanently in the house, or in road and trap cases for gigging.
Well, that's it! I feel much better now. I could use a drink. Oh, heh... different 'holic'

Sorry, but I don't know how to post a new topic so I have to tag on someone elses and your post is somewhat related. I've got a question regarding the so called Early Eighties K Zildjians made in the US--ones with the K logo on the bottom. Were these truly hand hammered or machined hammered like the modern ones, what years they were made? Also, any info on the "old" sabian B20 line. I have a sabian 14" hi hat that just says B20 in black logo and an engraved sabian letters, NOT the current rainbow Sabian engraving. Anybody know anything about these. The lathing seems similar to the current AA line, but the sound is allot more warmer/dark like the HH line. Any info on this would be great. Thanks

Bermuda, I think I would have such a hard time deciding which to use, I'd want to just set them ALL up somehow! I guess Weird Al would frown on that, though!

THis is a fun question...According to Paul "the hammer" Francis at Zildjian, they have not hand hammered anything since the 30's. (how did he get that nickname?) I have a Zildjian ad with Tony Williams that says right on it "Hand hammered in the old tradition...the NEW K". Many remember it from the old site..Chad posted it up for us all to see Tony in that fabulous green jumpsuit! The EAK (Early America K's) as they are generally referred to were made in the early 80's...Don't know for sure which years...They are generally notable for the "K" on the bottom, and also for a finer type lathing style, although there have been exceptions to both of these rules if I remember correctly. Someone else jump in and help me out...My cymbalholic knowledge has gotten a bit rusty in the time off /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

In the studio, I may have several setups standing by, already selected for the particular song. I'm rarely at a loss for the right sound!
On stage, I use all Sabian AA Metal-X hats, crashes & ride. In context (that is, hitting them hard,) they sound like powerful AA's and blend nicely with any style.

Only because he hasn't weighed in himself on this topic...this is copied from one of Bill Hartrick's ebay postings on the hand hammered EAKs. Its actually from an 18" dark crash that I bought and am anxiously awaiting to play in person because the sound file blew me away.
"These early American K's as they're sometimes called, have become the next group of vintage cymbals to become collectable. They are fairly rare and were made only in the short period from 1981-1984."
Just to fill in the dates that Patrick was missing.
