View Full Version : Edgar Bateman Playing NY For First Time In 20 Years

Edgar Bateman is a St. Louis born drummer who has played and/or
recorded with everyone from The 4 Tops and Platters to Eric Dolphy and
James Moody. Edgar is known as a drummer's drummer. He widely respected
for his remarkable ability to sound like multiple people playing at
once. Even with all of this he is widely unkown by the general jazz
listening audience. It's time for that to change. Jazz has lost many of
its legends in recent years. Let's not let another one slip away.
After 20 years this living legend will play in the capital of jazz, New
York City, for the first time in more than 20 years. Its an opportunity
for the jazz public, musicians, and media to get a taste of a living
legend. This landmark performance will take place as a part of the
monthly All About Jazz New York 1s and 2s concert series. The series,
held @ The Cornelia Street Cafe' (www.corneliastreetcafe.com), will
feature Edgar along with multi-reedist Michael Marcus. The performance
will take place on Thursday February 3rd. Set times are 8:30 & 10:00PM.
The very reasonable cover charge is only $12. This is an opportunity
you don't want to miss. Hearing Edgar Bateman play live guarantees this
will be some of the best $12 you have ever spent.

WOOOOOOOOO, damn! PLEASE give my highest respects to Mr. Bateman who is in my opinion one of the great underrated giants. If it were possible, I would be there without fail. Especially with Michael Marcus. That should be some very hip music, indeed.
Please keep us informed of Mr. Bateman's future performances.

What brandsize Drums and Cymbals has your Dad used/accumulated over the years...

My dad isn't really a gear head so he hasn't accumulated much. He actualy ended up in Philly partially because he had a set stolen from him in NY. Right now pop has 2 sets. One gretsch set that was stained a special color for him which is about 30 years old. He also has a newer Pearl jazz set that is about 5 years old. He's got about 10 cymbals. Mainly older Zildjians. Pop can't stand K's so there are none of them in the pack. Right now his main ride cymbal is a 20" ping ride that I bought him for his b-day a few years ago.

damn - if I wasn't in Utah - man maybe I'll take the redeye later this year have breakfast with formalist and go catch the show and then another redeye -
hey - BTW _ I have been aware of Edgar since I got "Drum Wisdom" - bob Moses' book and love his playing on Orrin's Record "Blessed Ones" where he shares the bill with Nasheet Waits - and shows Nasheet how to get it done(BTW - I dig Nasheet's playing too - but Edgar is the man!!!!)
glad to hear that he'll be back - if I still lived in Boston - I'd be there in a minute!

Well, first I should mention how great the duo was; not sure how much Mike and Edgar have played together, but the empathy was palpable. I have a hard time describing Edgar's playing because I've never witnessed anyone play the drums like that. KILLER groove while he played free stuff over it...an incredible interplay of drums and cymbals. It looked so effortless...flowed like honey. Edgar played a solo as a stand-alone "tune". Man, I still thought Mike was playing along; Edgar's solo was that musical...it just pulled you in. Seriously, my face hurt from grinning for 45 minutes straight /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Anyone recommend some cd's with Edgar? Dolphy stuff?

Wow! Its wonderful to read all the stuff you guys are saying about my dad. That you for supporting one of the lesser known greats. formalist I hope you filled out a mailing list card while you were there. If not, or for anyone else who is interested, you go to the soon to be developed website www.edgarbateman.com (http://www.edgarbateman.com) or email me @ info@focalpointmusic.com
That was the first time Michael and dad had "performed" together. They had a couple of rehearsals but thats it. The just did a follow-up performance a couple weeks ago in Philly. And dad's new organ trio performed on Sat(june 25th) the group featured Tim Warfield(sax) and Dan Kostelnik(organ). We are hoping to see more happening for this duo as well as Edgar in general.
Most of the Walt Dickerson stuff has been re-released on CD. Once the website is up and running I will be posting clips from the stuff that hasnt been re-released. I am also trying to record everything I can. the plan is to bootleg our own stuff and make it available for download on the website.
Thanks again for all the love and please keep in touch.

Believe me Dad is anxious to get to NY. We are hoping to get back to NY with a more traditional group configuration. Right now we are gonna be pushing the organ combo. I don't want to jinx anything but we are hoping to make 2005 one of the best years ever for my dad. This would include: press, recording, gigs, clinics, etc.
